At Haywood Pathways Center, the Ministry of Presence is the simple but meaningful practice of showing up with warmth, consistency, humility, and care. It means being with residents in everyday moments — sharing conversation before dinner, learning someone’s name, offering a smile, listening without judgment, playing music in the dining hall, praying with someone when invited, or simply being a calm and steady presence on campus.
This ministry matters because many residents come to Pathways carrying stress, loss, uncertainty, and difficult life experiences. Volunteers help create an environment where residents are seen, heard, respected, and reminded that they are not alone. The goal is not to fix, advise, or manage someone’s situation. The goal is to offer dignity, encouragement, and human connection through small acts of faithful presence.
Volunteers are an integral part of this work. Whether serving a meal, visiting during dinner, leading music, helping in the Clothing Cottage, walking with residents, offering prayer, or supporting a life skills activity, volunteers help make Haywood Pathways feel less like an institution and more like a community of care. Through their time, compassion, and consistency, volunteers help carry the heart of our mission: to provide hospitality, support, and hope to our neighbors.
